Easter in Vila Real: Holy Week and Where to Stay
Easter in Vila Real is quieter than in the big cities and closer to the traditions of Trás-os-Montes: processions through the historic centre, the compasso visiting homes on Easter Sunday, and folar on every table. With the Douro Valley just south of the city, it is also a good base for a spring break. This guide covers what usually happens and how to plan the stay.
When it happens
Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, so the dates move with Easter every year, usually in March or April. Good Friday is a public holiday in Portugal, and Easter week is also a holiday period in Spain, so it is a busy week for travel in the north. The parishes and the council publish the year's times shortly before.
Holy Week in the city
On Palm Sunday, palms are blessed in the city's churches. During the week there have been a Procissão do Encontro and Easter concerts, some of them in the cathedral.
The main procession is on Good Friday: the Procissão do Enterro do Senhor, organised by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, has traditionally left the Igreja da Misericórdia in the late afternoon and walked through the historic centre. In recent years hundreds of people have followed it in silence.
Easter Sunday: the compasso and the folar
On Easter Sunday morning, the compasso goes round the parishes: a small group carrying the cross visits homes with the Easter blessing, a tradition still very much alive in the north of Portugal.
Easter is also the season of folar. In Trás-os-Montes it is a bread filled with meats, and godparents traditionally give one to their godchildren. You will find it in bakeries and cafés across the city in the weeks before Easter.
The Douro in spring
Easter is a busy time in the Douro Valley, and hotels in the valley are in high demand over the long weekend. Staying in Vila Real gives you a city base for the holiday, with the valley a short drive away. Book tastings and lunches at the quintas ahead.
