City guide
Where to Stay in Braga
Braga is compact, but where you sleep still shapes the trip. Stay in the historic centre and you walk everywhere; stay a little further out and you trade a short walk or bus ride for quiet streets and easy parking. This guide explains the main options and which of our two Braga apartments fits which kind of visit.
The historic centre: for a first visit on foot
The old town around the Sé (Braga Cathedral), Rua do Souto, the Arco da Porta Nova and the Avenida Central is where most visitors want to be. The cathedral, the Jardim de Santa Bárbara, cafés, pastry shops and most restaurants are a few minutes apart, and much of it is pedestrianised.
It is the best base for a short city break, for Holy Week and the São João festival, which both take over these streets, and for anyone arriving by train or bus, since both stations are an easy walk away. The trade-offs: parking is paid and scarce, and on festival nights the centre stays lively late.
Our apartment on Largo do Paço sits right next to the cathedral, inside the historic centre.
East of the centre: quiet streets and free parking
East of the old town, towards the University of Minho's Gualtar campus, Braga becomes residential: supermarkets, local restaurants and space to park. The centre is a walk or a short bus ride away, and Bom Jesus do Monte is closer from here than from the old town.
This side suits travellers with a car, families and groups who want more room, people driving in for a concert, fair or congress at Altice Forum Braga, and anyone visiting the university's Gualtar campus.
Our larger Braga apartment is here, with free private parking.
Up the hill: Bom Jesus and Sameiro
On the wooded slopes east of the city, around the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary and Sameiro, you will find a few hotels with views over Braga. It is peaceful and green, but you depend on a car or the bus for every meal and every visit to the centre, so it works best for a quiet stay rather than a busy city break.
Which apartment suits your trip
Coming for the old town, a festival in the centre or a weekend without a car? Choose Largo do Paço. Coming by car, as a family or group, or to visit the University of Minho? Choose the apartment with free private parking. Both are licensed, have WiFi and a fully equipped kitchen, and you book directly with us, the owners.

Porto Airport is about 55 km away, roughly 45 minutes by car. Without a car, take the metro into Porto and a train from Porto São Bento or Campanhã to Braga station, which is within walking distance of the historic centre. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best area to stay in Braga?
For a first visit, the historic centre around the cathedral: everything worth seeing in the city is within walking distance. If you are driving or travelling as a group, the quieter streets east of the centre are easier, with parking and more space.
Do I need a car in Braga?
Not for the city itself. The centre is walkable and city buses reach Bom Jesus do Monte. A car helps for day trips to Guimarães, Ponte de Lima or the Peneda-Gerês National Park.
Is parking easy in Braga's historic centre?
Not really. Many streets are pedestrian and parking is mostly in paid car parks. If you are bringing a car, an apartment with private parking outside the old town saves time and money.
How do I get from Porto Airport to Braga?
By car it is about 55 km, roughly 45 minutes. By public transport, take the metro into Porto, then a train from São Bento or Campanhã to Braga.
