Where to Stay for Termas de Chaves
Chaves (from the Latin *Aquae Flaviae*) has been famous for its thermal waters since Roman times — the Emperor Vespasian himself reportedly bathed here. The town's thermal springs bubble up at 73°C, among the hottest in Portugal, and are rich in sodium bicarbonate and sulphur, with documented benefits for digestive, rheumatic, and skin conditions. The modern Termas de Chaves complex offers a full range of treatments from classical thermal baths to contemporary wellness therapies and medical consultation. The spa is set in attractive gardens in the town centre, alongside the remarkable 16-arched Roman bridge over the Tâmega river. Chaves is also renowned for its smoked presunto (ham) and chouriço, making it a perfect stop for gastronomy tourism alongside the thermal experience.
