Where to Stay for Festas Gualterianas

The Festas Gualterianas are Guimarães' most important annual celebration, honouring São Gualter (Saint Walter) with a programme of concerts, the famous Marcha Gualteriana parade, traditional bullfights (tourada), a historical cortege, and cultural events throughout the UNESCO World Heritage historic centre. The highlight is the Marcha Gualteriana — a spectacular nighttime parade with illuminated floats, marching bands, and thousands of participants winding through the medieval streets. The festival also features the Cortejo do Linho (Linen Cortège), celebrating the region's textile heritage, and the Batalha das Flores (Battle of Flowers). Guimarães is known as the 'Birthplace of Portugal' and its medieval centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is just 25 minutes from Braga, making our apartments an excellent base for attending the Gualterianas while enjoying the comfort and amenities of a larger city.

Tips for Attending Festas Gualterianas

The Marcha Gualteriana parade on Saturday evening is unmissable — find a spot along Alameda de São Dâmaso early. Guimarães' medieval centre is compact and best explored on foot.

Getting There

From our Braga apartments: 25 minutes by car via A11, or 20 minutes by direct train from Braga station. Return trains run late during the festival.

Parking

Parking in Guimarães centre is very limited during the festival. We recommend taking the train from Braga or parking at the edge of the city and walking in.
